GREAT QUESTIONS TO ASK FIREWOOD SUPPLIERS

Sometimes, it can be difficult to know where to find the best quality firewood for your home. It's not just as simple as doing a Google search. You want to check with family and friends for a reputable business. Here are a few questions to make sure you ask when calling or emailing your firewood suppliers.

How Do You Prepare Your Firewood?

First of all, it's best to search for firewood that is professionally split. In our experience, average pieces should range from 15 to 16 inches in length which will fit most fireplaces. Plus, according to the Chimney Safe Institute of America, properly stored firewood can be used for up to four years before it needs to be replaced. Ask if they put their wood through a wood tumbler, which removes unwanted debris. Do they store their firewood in a covered building? This will provide you with clean, dry, quality firewood for burning inside or outside of your home year-round.

What Types of Wood Do They Offer?

Look for firewood that is made from a good mixture of hardwoods. For example, our premium seasoned firewood is made from a combination of oak, birch, maple, ash, and basswood. We also carry other options like straight birch and straight oak. Our professionals also offer premium seasoned specialty wood cut to 12" pieces that can be used for saunas and smaller older fireplaces.

What Size or Dimensions Do They Sell?

Typical homeowners will purchase a face cord, also known as a fireplace cord, that's 4’X8’X16”. This is considered 1/3 of a full cord. 3 face cords equal your true logger’s cord which is 4’X4’X8’X16”. Other sizes you may be familiar with are 4’x4’X16”, or a half of a face cord.

Do They Offer Certified Firewood as an Option?

To save yourself some hassle, look for
firewood suppliers who are licensed to sell certified firewood that is permitted to be used anywhere within the United States. For example, if you choose to order certified firewood from Jays, you will receive a "safe-to-move certificate" with your purchase. This allows you to transport the firewood anywhere within the US including State and National Parks.
